About Darren

I am currently a Shelby County Sheriff's Deputy. I've been with the Sheriff's department for more than 20 years, starting as a Correctional Officer. I help teach the self defense courses at the training academy to ensure all deputies can adequately protect themselves when the need arises

I started lessons under Grandmaster Kang Rhee when I was a teenager. Grandmaster Rhee was an amazing martial artist and a very strict instructor. Unfortunately I had to suspend my training for a few years due to life events. When I restarted, I quickly progressed. I currently hold an 8th Degree Black Belt and am the owner of Scorpion Martial Arts. I want to give kids and adults a safe place to learn all of the benefits being a marital artist. These include better self-confidence in any situation, discipline to focus on the task at hand, paying attention to all aspects of that task to ensure it is done properly and respect. Respect is something that is earned and that has to be maintained through honesty and integrity.
